The Swicegood Group, Inc. Sets World Record Auction Sale for Henderson Guitar to Benefit Rugby Volunteer Rescue Squad in South West Virginia
Mocksville, NC – The Swicegood Group, Inc., a leader in auctions and real estate, has made history by setting a world record for the highest auction sale of a flattop guitar by a living American luthier. Wayne Henderson’s custom flat top guitar, #937, fetched a groundbreaking final bid of $67,850 including the buyer’s premium, surpassing the previous record set in 2006..
The guitar, a Henderson D-42, featuring Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, European Moon Spruce top, and intricate Abalone inlays, was auctioned to raise funds for the Rugby Volunteer Rescue Squad & Fire Department. This remote community organization in Grayson County, Virginia, suffered devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. In a remarkable gesture of generosity, Wayne Henderson, legendary luthier and guitarist, donated this masterpiece to the auction, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the Rescue Squad.
A Record-Breaking Achievement
The auction not only captured the attention of guitar enthusiasts but also drew a wide variety of bidders, each vying for the opportunity to own a piece of musical and cultural history. When the hammer fell, the guitar had shattered the previous record of $31,200 set for Henderson’s #327, famously known as “Clapton’s Guitar,” sold at Christie’s in 2020.
T. Kyle Swicegood, Founder and CEO of The Swicegood Group, remarked, “We are honored to have been the facilitators of this auction. Working with a music legend like Wayne has been the highlight of our year. His generosity to his community is what America is all about.”
The Legacy of Wayne Henderson
Wayne Henderson is not only a world-renowned luthier but also an accomplished musician who has performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and across seven countries in Asia. His guitars are celebrated for their unparalleled volume, tone, and resonance, making them highly sought after by collectors and musicians worldwide. Henderson’s reputation extends beyond his artistry, as he was awarded the National Heritage Award in 1995 by the National Endowment for the Arts.
In true Appalachian tradition, Henderson creates about 20 instruments a year, with each one embodying his meticulous craftsmanship and passion for music. The guitar auctioned, #937, is no exception, featuring Curly Mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard and bridge, and 42-style Abalone trim, making it as visually stunning as it is acoustically brilliant.
A Cause Close to the Community
The proceeds from the auction will provide much-needed relief and support for the Rugby Volunteer Rescue Squad & Fire Department, whose operations were heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene. Situated in a remote area, the squad & fire department plays a vital role in the safety and well-being of its community.
Speaking about his donation, Henderson shared, “I wanted to do something meaningful for my community. This guitar represents more than craftsmanship—it’s about giving back to the people who’ve always supported me and this region.”
